After being inspired by another art teacher to use an open classroom, here is our first project.
They were given a principle of art : contrast and a theme: What's the point?
They were to brainstorm literal and fugitive ideas for these concepts.

What's the point of putting graffiti under a bridge when no one sees it?

White Board Paint from Home Depot
After reading other reviews and talking to my friend, I decided to paint a base coat of a paint I had in the house.  I was worried that I wouldn't have enough white board paint to coat the magnetic paint solid.
1st coat there is no smell at all and the paint is very thin.  I bought a real nice 9in roller from Sherwin Williams and a small 3in sponge roller. They told me to use the little roller for a smoother finish. But I didn't want it to take all after noon to paint since I only had an hour from when I mixed the 2 components.  The big roller worked perfect!  I used the small roller at one point but I felt if left lines.

2nd coat! I'm so glad I painted that layer of tan down.   I think the color would not have been this solid if I didn't.

 3rd coat real shiny!
Here it is complete!  You can see where the paint went under the tape so make sure you press it down pretty good.  Easy fix though.  I think I might paint a tree around the edge with a wood grain texture!
Now we have to wait 3 days before we can play on it.
Over all it was pretty easy. I am not a professional painter and did a lot of things wrong but I think I turned out pretty nice.  I'm excited to give it a boarder to cover up where the paint bled under the tape.

Even though this post does not have anything to do with my students, it is something I wanted to do, I thought it was fun.

Today I ventured out and bought some magnetic wall paint. It is a primer that goes under colored latex paint that way any surface can be magnetic!
First off let me just say... AWESOME!
Secondly I also found dry erase paint!  DOUBLE AWESOME!!!! (will be completed this weekend)

I found it at home depot with a friend she is doing her wall too!

I taped the area that I wanted to be magnetic. Any shape you want! The box says you have about a 16 Sq ft area about of paint.  This is  about 4 1/2 ft x 7 ft.  I wanted a dividing line in the middle, so the kids know when to stop.
Coat #1
OMG this stuff stinks!  Open your windows if you can! It's very thick does not spread well.

Coat #2
You can see the difference!  I hope it works was all was thinking at this point! Very very black!

Coat #3
I couldn't even see where I was painting.

It was very bumpy to the touch so I sanded it. You may want to grab a mask for the dust, I didn't want magnetic lungs.

LOOK it works!  I stuck my I <3 NY  magnet to it!
I have to wait 4 hours until I can paint the dry erase paint and that will have be another post!

At 14 she stood up for her rights to learn and was shot by the Taliban for voicing her opinion. At 16 she is an education activist, wrote a book about her experiences "I Am Malala"and is nominated for the noble peace prize!!  We can learn a lot from her. Check out the link below! Watch the Jon Stewart video!  She is amazing!

More than half way done!  They are really getting the hang of it! Plus every time a student walks by and asks who is it they get a hole speech on women's educational rights!

Standing back and looking at their work!
