This is ever bodies favorite project!  Lesson plan below!

Clay ball about the size of an extra large grapefruit.
rolling pin
texture material (optional) lace, burlap, toile , etc.
plastic cup or bowl
glaze

Once the students have rolled their clay into a ball have them first flatten it with their hands so they can roll it flat with a rolling pin.  They need to leave to center thicker than the edges.  It tends to rip in the center when placed on the cup to hold its shape.
Now you have some choices.
1. Texture can be added  to one or both sides by rolling materials like burlap or lace or toile with a rolling pin.
2.  You can rip the edges or not rip the edges depending on the effect you are trying to get.

Once you have finished with all the extras you need to lift the piece and place it on a tall plastic cup or bowl.
Try and find the center the best you can so that it will sit flat when you turn it over.
This is where you can play with all of the edges to flip and curve them to your liking. You may need to put paper towels under any droopy edges.
Fire when fully dry and have them glaze the inside and out side what ever color you wish them to use!!!
Voila!!  It's really easy !!!! My students finish this in a day!!!
And they always love the out come!!!!
