Art 1 again is really working on their creativity and elements of art.
They had to create many different  sketches before they did their final work for this project.  They were to create a letter, an animal and a crazy shape, to fill with zentangles that are all the rage right now!

Art one has been working really hard on their elements of art!
For their 1st project they used a font of their choice to create a word that they added texture to the background in varying layers to create a shadow.

This is the rubric for grading the blog posts.

60 points total for each post

I Followed Directions Points
40 possible points in this section
20 points - minimum of 2 pictures 1 in progress and one completed

----------------------------------------------
Content Points
60 possible points in this section
Level 3 - 60 points - your writing analyzes your work process honestly and explains your thinking clearly using art vocabulary. Your pictures provide visual evidence to support your writing.

“For this project I used oil pastels, and ended up gaining more proficiency then I had before. I learned that you can use the burnishing technique with oil pastels too. Not only does this make the colors look more vibrant but it also blends better if you apply it in layers. Using this technique I colored the flamingos pink with peach, yellow, red and white pastels. They blended well and gave the flamingos a natural color.”

“I learned many new techniques and processes while doing the sphere warm-up. I learned how to shade the whole sphere the local color, and then layer on colors to give the sphere more depth. The darkest color is the core shadow, and the lightest color is around the sphere's highlight. I also learned how to layer colors on top of one another in order to get the shade that you need. I gained skill with colored pencils because I learned how the amount of weight you put on the pencil determines how dark the shading is.”

Level 2 - 50 points  - your writing is surface level, thoughts aren’t clearly explained. Your photos are related to what you write about but don’t provide clear evidence.

“My art was original. I found a picture of a bird to use as inspiration but I changed things. This made my art my own.”

To make it a three explain why you think your art is original, describe how you changed the picture and add art vocabulary.
“My art is original because I took an idea I found on Pinterest and made it my own by changing the bird to a fish. I also included a sunset for the background instead of solid black like the original because I wanted to include a beach theme. I used a picture I took on a family trip for the sunset, which made the drawing even more my own because the photo was my work”.

Level 1-  40 points - your writing is general and could apply to anyone’s work, thoughts aren’t explained. Your photos aren’t connected to your writing.

“My art is original because I did it. I came up with the ideas and that makes it my own. I’m really happy with my work.”

I love to make examples and use them to inspire my students.  Here are some fun examples I just created.

                                                          Completed coil and slab pumpkins

This ceramics project was "What can I hold?"
My pumpkin has a hidy hole up inside of it to
                                             hold keys, notes, pictures, etc.
This pumpkin was created all out of coils and is hollow inside.

My large lidded jar and my teapot are the two pieces that show my growth the most. At the beginning of the semester i wasn't able to bring up my cup above 4 inches, and now i can get it up to about 8-9 inches. Also I had no clue on how to create a lid, but now i can do it successfully. The jar was also my favorite project to do because i love bringing things up and smoothing them out. My teapot final also shows my growth because before i never used to add anything to any of my projects and with this I added a large tree. Also it taught me how to make a different type of lid. When i glazed it I had to get in all the tiny places which also helped me get better. The teapot made me struggle a little bit too because i had to figure out how to do a spout. Overall my teapot and jars showed my growth the most.- Avery

Most successful projects

My project that I believe was most successful is my non-traditional portrait of Chris Evans. The theme of the portrait and topic centered around the idea of a non-traditional medium idea where we are required to use an untypical medium. To obtain the non-traditional status, I chose to use makeup as the medium. To start the project though, I used pencil to outline his major features and then went over it in varying shades and styles of makeup including eye shadow, bronzer, blush, and eyeliner. The first thing that I colored was his hair/beard/eyebrows using a little of the eye shadow/bronzer to fill in the spaces. After completing the eyes using more eyeliner and eye shadow, I wen to on creating the definition of his face using bronzer and eye shadow. Lastly, I created the jacket/shirt by using wet eye shadow and eyeliner to create the lowlights and highlights. I believe using this size paper and medium added to enhancing the project because of the similarities between makeup and actual skin tones. The makeup also made it very easy to add definition and realistic aspects to the portrait that greatly enhanced the project.    -jackie

The Up Close and Personal project is my most successful piece. It is of the Statue of Liberty's Torch with the moon behind. The theme of this project was Up Close and Personal, for this I was allowed to use oil pastels, which is my medium. The process I went through to finish this was first I had to come up with an idea, I had many different ideas such as a China Plate, an eye, or a flower, I chose the torch. The second step was getting the sketch then drawing the sketch on my final piece of paper. I then colored with oil pastels, I used many different techniques one being shading. I finished it off by adding more detail to the flame and adding the shadow using shading by the hand. I chose to draw the picture portrait style since it was a tall object that I needed to draw, I didn't need to shrink or smash the torch. I thought after the torch was finished that the oil pastels really made all the objects pop out/stick out from the paper. The shading also helped me distinguish between the hand and the torch. If I could not tell that there was a difference between the hand and the torch then everything would blend together and no one could tell the difference, maybe even what the artwork was of.  - allyson
